These top Google searches of 2017 are depressing AF

Google revealed its most searched terms of 2017 on Wednesday, which in the US included Hurricane Irma and Matt Lauer as well as other men accused of sexual misconduct this year.

The second top search was for former "Today" show anchor Matt Lauer, who was sacked from NBC last month for a complaint about inappropriate sexual behavior. It was a tough year in many aspects, and the searches reflect it accordingly.

Following close behind Lauer were rock star Tom Petty, who died in October, the Super Bowl and the Las Vegas massacre. He beat producer Harvey Weinstein on the list, who came in at number three and is accused of sexually harassing at least 80 women. Meghan Markle made the list at No. 2 because of her engagement to Prince Harry.

Why the Geminids Are the Best Meteor Shower of 2017
Since being discovered in the mid-1880s, the geminids have grown from 10 to 20 meteors an hour to upwards of 100. And the show has only gotten better since then, as Jupiter's gravity has pulled the particles closer to Earth.

In the consumer tech category, the top 5 most searched for are as follows: the iPhone 8, iPhone X, Nintendo Switch, Samsung Galaxy S8, and Xbox One X. In the "How to" category, the top search was for "how to make slime", followed by "how to make solar eclipse glasses", "how to buy Bitcoin", "how to watch Mayweather vs McGregor", and "how to make a fidget spinner". The Netflix show "13 Reasons Why", which dealt with suicide, was No. 5, and Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington was No. 9 after he committed suicide in July.

Last year's most searched terms included Prince, Powerball and Hillary Clinton, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Top global searches includes a natural disaster, the latest phones, celebrities, TV shows, and more.

While it's far from the only major story in 2017, what's breathtaking about these results is how the recent reckoning about bad behavior by men in power came to overtake the news cycle in the final quarter of the year and how, as more allegations surface every day, it continues to grow. The iPhone 8 and iPhone X took the second and third spots, respectively, in the United States.
