Rep. John Conyers Announces He's Retiring Today

Democratic Rep. John Conyers resigned from Congress on Tuesday after a almost 53-year career, becoming the first Capitol Hill politician to lose his job in the torrent of sexual misconduct allegations sweeping through the nation's workplaces.

Conyers, 88, announced Tuesday morning during an interview on Praise 102.7 FM that he is retiring and is endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him.

The minority leader had spent a few days prior to November 26 working with Conyers and other Congressional Black Caucus members on how to "lay groundwork for him to step aside gracefully", the aide told NPR's Scott Detrow. Members of the Democratic leadership, including Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jim Clyburn, one of the elder members of the Congressional Black Caucus, all called on Conyers to step down.

Conyers, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus who was first elected to the House in 1964, stepped down last month as the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. Court documents also revealed that another staffer in 2007 filed - and later dropped - a lawsuit against Conyers, claiming that the lawmaker sexually harassed her in 2015 and 2016, while she was working for him.

After distancing itself from the candidate, the Republican National Committee followed suit, announcing it is helping fund Moore's campaign for next Tuesday's special election. It featured about a dozen speakers and lasted a little more than an hour. "He is going to retire, ' Conyers" great-nephew Ian, a MI state senator, told the New York Times, adding that he planned to run for the seat in Congress himself, suggesting Conyers would step down at the end of his term and won't seek reelection.

Conyers, has admitted to paying a settlement to a former staffer but denies her sexual harassment allegations.

Conyers's legacy was a complicating factor for his CBC colleagues as they weighed how to respond to the misconduct allegations.

Conyers became an icon during the civil rights movement.

Several women have accused the Michigan Democrat, who is the most senior member of Congress, of verbal abuse, inappropriate touching and groping over decades.

Conyers's decision to step aside comes as Congress struggles to explain its secretive process for investigating and settling claims about sexual harassment and other workplace misconduct.

After a 15-year struggle, Conyers succeeded in establishing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a federal holiday in 1986. "Systemic change is urgently needed so no other women have to endure the retaliation, secrecy and delays my client Marion Brown and others experienced".
