Palestinian shot dead by Israeli settler in West Bank

The BBC's Tom Bateman in Jerusalem says tensions between settlers and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have been on the rise. The global community has repeatedly called their presence and rising population the main impediment to potential peace in the region.

Towards the end of last month, Israeli settlers poisoned and stole olives from Palestinian land in the Qalqiliya village of Jit in the occupied West Bank.

Avraham Binyamin, a spokesperson for the Yitzhar settlement, said the hike was part of a "bar mitzvah trip for one of the children".

Israeli medics treated him at the scene, but he died from his wounds.

When the Palestinian farmers arrived to tend to their olives, they realised that a large amount of the fully grown trees were poisoned after being sprayed with toxic chemicals. They were later rescued by Israeli security forces. The IDF said it opened an investigation into the incident. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said forces were searching for the suspect who fled the scene. Israel says a lot of them were attackers and that others died in clashes with Israeli forces. The army added that after the incident the hikers sought refuge in a nearby cave until soldiers came to assist them.

Palestinian reports said Odeh was working in his field when the hikers arrived.

The Samaria Regional Council said in a statement that there were approximately 100 Palestinians who attacked the group of children and parents.

According to Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian Authority official who monitors settlement activity in the northern West Bank, Israeli soldiers took Odeh's body into custody as it was being taken to a hospital in the city of Nablus. The Israeli boys were hiking from Migdalim to Kida in the Nablus area.
