Scientists say there will be more earthquakes next year

U.S. geoscientists consider it very likely that in 2018, or perhaps in the next few years, there will be a significant increase in the number of strong earthquakes around the world.

It is thought that tiny fluctuations in the Earth's rotation will change the length of a day by approximately one millisecond, which could create giant shifts in energy beneath the planet's surface. According to scientists, due to a slowing in the Earth's rotation, the planet will be hit with powerful earthquakes that could have overwhelming and devastating consequences.

The rotation of the Earth can change by a few miliseconds a day.

Now, a team of researchers has found a correlation between these periods of Earth's slowdowns, and an uptick in the number of significant earthquakes around the world.

Scientists have warned dozens of earthquakes could devastate the world next year.

This was up from the figure of 15 major earthquakes on average in a normal year. They finally concluded that when the earth's rotation slows down, it triggers more earthquakes of higher intensity.

"We see it as yet another example of a fortuitous correlation between natural disaster occurrence and an unrelated phenomenon".

However, they said it is hard to indicate precisely when and where these future earthquakes will occur, but they clearly noted that most of the additional 7M earthquakes have historically occurred near the equator in the West and East Indies. We still don't have a way to accurately predict earthquakes, but this might be the first step if Bilham and Bendick prove to be right next year.

"The correlation ... can be shown to precede seismicity by 5-6 years, permitting societies at risk from earthquakes an unexpected glimpse of future seismic hazard". About one billion people live in areas near the equator.

According to a recent study conducted by two American geophysicists earlier this year, variations in the speed of Earth's rotation cause intense seismic activity.

The researchers stressed that it is certainly hard to predict where the extra earthquakes will occur. They seem to follow periodic slowdowns in speed of the Earth's rotation.

Earth is expected to experience a little more rock and roll than usual next year.

They further suggested that these slight changes in the Earth's core may be responsible for this effect. Often times, geologists are limited to historical trends in data to predict the likelihood an quake will occur.
