Software problem caused train collision at Singapore's Joo Koon station

Seven more commuters sought treatment yesterday after the train collision at Joo Koon MRT station on Wednesday morning, bringing the total number of those injured in the accident to 36. It said in a statement that a train stopped at the Joo Koon station heading westwards towards Tuas Link station.

The last time that an MRT train collision happened in Singapore was more than two decades ago, according to a report by the Channel News Asia today.

As a result, 23 passengers and two SMRT staff members received slight to moderate injuries as they were admitted to the National University Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

In a joint statement, Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT stated that there was one case of walk-in at NUH and patient has returned home since.

As a precaution, SMRT and LTA stopped train services between Joo Koon and Tuas Link yesterday to facilitate investigations.

They also said that there were five new walk-in cases at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and the hospital received one new case conveyed by an ambulance and the patient is now being treated.

The remaining 11 sustained minor injuries of sprains and minor head injuries.

An independent inquiry panel had later found that the accident was caused by a 50l oil spill from a maintenance locomotive which had been doing maintenance hours along the MRT track before the collision.

"When it started to come close to Joo Koon Circle, we all heard a loud bang and everyone who was standing fell to the ground", said the 43-year-old manager.

Trains continued to run in both directions on the unaffected side of the station platform, with SMRT announcing that commuters should expect 10 minutes of extra travelling time between Joo Koon and Tuas Link stations.

He sustained bruises on his left knee and arm. "The driver said on the speaker system that help was on the way", said Ong.

"All passengers were thrown forward including me".
