Bodies of 26 teenage African girls found floating in Mediterranean Sea

A Spanish warship, Cantabria, carrying 375 other migrants, brought the deceased women's bodies to the southern Italian town of Solerno, Agence France Presse reported.

It has been reported by the BBC that 26 Nigerian women have lost their lives while attempting to cross the Mediterranean sea.

Italian prosecutors are investigating the deaths, as they are suspicious that the women and girls may have been sexually abused and murdered as they attempted to migrate across the Mediterranean.

Libya is notorious for human traffickers, and this particular port in Salerno and the route to Europe is well-known to authorities, who are struggling to keep up with the spiraling numbers of smugglers.

Rescue workers found their bodies floating near a sinking rubber boat. Of the 400 people rescued and brought overseas Spanish vessel, Cantabria, 90 women and 52 minors, including a week-old-baby were saved. Sub-Saharan Africans wishing to flee poverty or war have taken advantage of Libya's power vacuum.

The two men arrested in connection with the finding have been identified as Libyan Al Mabrouc Wisam Harar and Egyptian Mohamed Ali Al Bouzid.

Not smoking gets Japanese workers an extra week of vacation
The frequent cigarette breaks meant many employees were away from their desks upwards of 15 minutes each day, Matsushima added. Almost 40 percent of men in their 30s smoke, though that's down from more than half in 2001, according to government figures.

That's a smaller number than the same area saw in the same period a year ago, where 159,467 migrants arrived in Italy and 3,615 people died on the route, according to the IOM.

Malfi said investigators would look to see if the women had been assaulted. The number who died on that route was 2,639, the IOM says. The International Organization for Migration said Friday that more than 2,560 migrants had been rescued over four days.

The Italian government, facing an unending flow of people from Africa and an increase in anti-migrant sentiments from its people, wants to limit the thousands of refugees arriving on its shores each month.

Since January, at least 113,957 migrants arrived in Italy after crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

Italian media report a total of 375 migrants rescued from the sea and now in the warship are sub-Saharan Africans from Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, The Gambia and Sudan.

The route from sub-Saharan Africa to Libya is also risky, especially for women.
