Shooter taken down after several shot at church in Sutherland Springs

At least 27 people are feared dead after a gunman opened fire during services at a Texas church Sunday. A two-year-old was among the wounded, the Dallas Morning News website reported.

Sunday's attack comes just a month after the one of the deadliest mass shootings in USA history, when 58-year-old Stephen Paddock killed 59 people and at least 527 others.

A pastor of a neighboring church told local TV media that he knows numerous victims, and he is confident that the victims are "in the loving arms of Jesus" right now.

A sheriff said a man walked into a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs and started shooting.

At least 8 patients are being treated at University Hospital in San Antonio, according to spokeswoman Leni Kirkman, who added the situation is still active and the hospital may receive more patients.

Reports suggest up to 27 people have been killed at a church shooting in South Texas.

There was no indication of the gunman's motive. Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told the Wilson County News that the shooter had been "taken down", but it's not known how the shooter died.

"My heart is broken", Gamez said.

One witness, Carrie Matula, told NBC News: "We heard semi-automatic gunfire ... we're only about 50 yards away from this church". "In a small community, real quiet and everything, and look at this, what can happen".

Local ABC affiliate KSAT 12 reported the gunman entered the church at around 11:30 local time (6.30am NZDT).

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement that his office "stands ready to assist local law enforcement as needed".

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting an "evil act", and promised "more details" from the state's Department of Public Safety soon.
