Others had similar ideas for what should happen to the departing employee. The company is conducting an internal investigation into the deleting of President Trump's account.

The account was restored by 7:03 p.m.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a former Twitter employee said it was unlikely a worker with suspension privileges would also be able to hijack an account to send out messages.

"Different types of access", the former employee said. "I guess the word must finally be getting out-and having an impact", he wrote.

Trump's eight-year-old @realdonaldtrump account has almost 42 million followers.
