An Unprecedented Study Has Revealed 72 New Breast Cancer Gene Variants

"Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women both in the developed and less developed world".

"Many women are offered mammogram screenings when they are middle-aged, but if we know a woman has genetic markers that place her at higher risk of breast cancer, we can recommend more intensive screening at a younger age".

For one in five women, the family history written into their genes increases their risk of being diagnosed by nearly a third. It should also help to identify more effectively the women with a high risk of suffering from such a cancer, but also to reduce the screening to be unnecessary and over-diagnosis.

How much can the newly identified genes predict about breast cancer risk?

Dr Pallave Dasari, an Australian breast cancer research fellow at University of Adelaide, said that while she believed this was a "really valuable" progression in understanding family history risk, a test was "extremely premature" at this stage.

Increased level of physical activity in the form of regular exercise is associated with a decreased risk for breast cancer, and this has been validated by numerous studies. When the researchers took a closer look at these, they found distinct patterns specific to breast cancer.

The National Cancer Institute says only 1% of males can get breast cancer, one of these men is Cecil Herrin.

The findings are published today in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics. "This should provide guidance for a lot of future research".

My passion for fund raising for the Breast Care Unit increases as I hear of more and more women who, like me, have benefitted from the care and support they received from the fantastic team at The Breast Care Unit whilst going through their breast cancer journey.
