Khemenei warns: Iran will cut the nuclear deal into shreds

Khamenei said: "The Europeans' following of America's bullying policy is not acceptable".

U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to slap sanctions on Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards is the "exact opposite" of what Washington should be doing if it wants to effect peaceful change in the Middle Eastern country, one analyst has told CNBC.

He has threatened to terminate the Obama-era agreement altogether.

The EU leaders' joint statement, agreed after talks in Brussels on Thursday, "reaffirms full commitment to the Iran nuclear deal". The nature of this conflict is described well by the Lebanese journalist Khairallah Khairallah, who says that the United States has rediscovered Iran and the most important thing in Trump's speech is that it the U.S. is now dealing with Iran as a whole and this has put the nuclear deal in its proper framework.

Kerry, a former Senator who headed the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Swiss media that Trump's leaving the Iranian deal's fate to Congress was "very dangerous" and opened the door to "party politics". Iran should view these developments as a sign of weakening in the stance taken by Britain, Germany and even France over its earlier ambivalence regarding separation of the deal with Tehran's behavior in its region.

On Wednesday, an Twitter account attributed to Ayatollah Khamenei quoted him as telling students in Tehran that it was a "waste of time for anyone to answer" Mr Trump.

Mr Khamenei added: "They are angry as today the Islamic republic of Iran has disrupted their plans in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq".

"Or if they ask, 'Why does Iran have missiles?' then our response is, 'Why do they have missiles and nuclear weapons?'"

It was with profound disappointment that the Europeans greeted Mr Trump's repudiation of the agreement last Friday. The UK, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union all endorsed the agreement.

The nuclear deal places Iran under tough restraints, including inspections, round-the-clock surveillance and tracking every ounce of uranium produced, Kerry said.
