Trump administration's immigration policy wish list could derail deal to protect 'dreamers'

Sens. Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and Charles E. Schumer (D-New York) criticized Trump's administration in a joint statement saying that their list of immigration proposals is a "anathema to the Dreamers, to the immigrant community and to the vast majority of Americans". Under these principles, there will be restrictions for family-based green cards to spouses and minor children and there will also be a creation for a point-based system for legal immigration. It includes the funding of a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Faced with pressure for his decision to repeal the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals (DACA) last month, Trump has agreed to sign a bill that could protect dreamers (beneficiaries of the program).

The list of hard-line immigration demands runs against the supposed tentative agreement that President Donald Trump reached with Democratic leaders.

The immigration proposals were delivered to Congressional leaders yesterday, said Marc Short, the White House director of legislative affairs.

About 690,000 recipients are now enrolled in the program, and their work permits are due to expire in March 2018. The DACA program announced by the DAA against the Constitution, which has given two years of work permits to young migrants dealing with illicit immigrants in the USA, announced last month that it will be reduced in stages.

Trump had previously said he wanted "massive" border security as part of any deal to protect the Dreamers, undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children.

Donald Trump has proposed a merit-based immigration system that could benefit highly- skilled Indian workers but prevents them from sponsoring their extended families, as part-of an aggressive plan which the U.S. president said will serve national interest.

Top congressional Democrats say the list is unreasonable and fails to represent any attempt at compromise.

'We told the President at our meeting that we were open to reasonable border security measures alongside the DREAM Act, but this list goes so far beyond what is reasonable.

The problem, she said, "cannot be bandaged over at the presidential level through another executive order that can be rescinded by a subsequent administration". Here's the president speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One at the time, casually referring to the Democratic leaders by their first names.

Under Mr Obama's policy, they were able to apply for work and study permits but critics said the scheme amounted to an amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Cut back on the ability of American citizens to sponsor family members to immigrate into the United States.

What gives? A month ago, Trump liked making deals with Pelosi and Schumer.

Mayor Emanuel said The President ought to stick with the deal he struck with Democrats and not change things now.
