Irving Oil Says Decision to Cancel Energy East Is a Lost Opportunity

In the summer of 2016, the National Energy Board's review of Energy East was compromised after it was revealed by the National Observer that former Quebec Premier Jean Charest met the chairman and two commissioners on the National Energy Board while working for TransCanada.

Girling had previously called the pipeline a historic opportunity to connect the oil resources of Canada's west to eastern consumers.

"I could be at the grocery store, I could be at the coffee shop, and people would constantly stop or say to me "protect our drinking water".

Environment Minister David Heurtel said his government got no response from the company to two letters it sent in late 2014 advising that the project must pass a provincial environmental impact assessment.

September 9, 2016: The National Energy Board sidelines all three Energy East reviewers following complaints that two of them met privately with a TransCanada consultant the year before and discussed the proposed oil pipeline. The Eastern Mainline project would add new gas pipeline and compression facilities to an existing system in Southern Ontario, where most of the country's home and industrial gas consumers are located.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre said the TransCanada announcement was "a handsome victory" against a "botched" pipeline project.

Irving Oil did not make anyone available for an interview, but the company president said in a release that this is a blow for the country, not just Saint John and New Brunswick.

The premiers of Alberta and New Brunswick expressed disappointment over the decision, while the Opposition Conservatives blasted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government for "disastrous" energy policies that they blame for lost jobs and investment.

As Energy East supporters lamented the loss of jobs and revenue, Indigenous opponents, environmental activists and a number of Quebec politicians celebrated.

In the last elections, out of 12 assembly seats in Konkan region, the Congress (under Rane's leadership) could win only one. I will go." But he ducked the question on the ministry promised to him by the BJP.

The company said in a statement that "after a careful review of change circumstances", it would tell Canadian energy regulators and those in Quebec it was no longer pursuing the project.

Energy East would have carried oil from Alberta and Saskatchewan to refineries on the east coast for processing, and shipment overseas.

In a statement released by TransCanada, the company said it is now reviewing the company's $1.3 billion carrying value.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said Thursday that now Energy East is dead, there is an even greater urgency in completing the Trans Mountain project to B.C.to diversify the industry's export markets beyond the United States.

"Today's announcement is not the result of a sudden decision by TransCanada".

Heurtel asked TransCanada Pipelines to supply a report on the environmental impact of Energy East in Quebec.

The company said it would take a C$1 billion after-tax non-cash charge in its fourth quarter.

The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association and Regina Mayor Michael Fougere also spoke in favour of Energy East.

He says the project was never properly explained to Quebecers. "Movements will continue to stand up to projects that we know are not in the best interests of our communities, our climate, and our children".
