Aging robot arm gets spacewalk surgery

NASA Commander Randy Bresnik and Mark Vande Hei floated out Thursday morning to replace one of two Latching End Effectors (LEE) on the Canadarm2.

NASA has scheduled three spacewalks at the International Space Station this month to perform station maintenance.

Bresnik, on his third walk, and Vande Hei, on his first, are tasked with fixing the orbiting lab's crucial robotic arm, called the Canadarm2, according to NASA officials.

During three spacewalks on October 5, 10 and 18, astronauts will replace an aging Latching End Effector (LEE) at the end of the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

They duo have been assigned to revolve around getting the Canadian robotic arm in good shape for doing work outside ISS. The LEE works as the "hand" of Canadarm2 and is used to grapple incoming cargo spacecraft.

New Google Pixel 2, 2 XL may come to India before Diwali
The leaked images suggest that both the handsets will sport dual speakers at the front - one above and another below the display. The Pixel 2 XL has nearly the same specs except for the 6-inch screen with QHD+ display resolution, and an 18:9 aspect ratio.

The astronauts will fix the latching mechanism on the end of the Canadian robotic arm which is not functioning properly. As extravehicular crewmember 1 (EV 1), Bresnik gets to wear the suit with red stripes on it, while Vande Hei (EV 2) will wear a plain white suit. It's the first of three NASA spacewalks planned over the next two weeks. One LEE is connected to the ISS by attaching the arm to the station; the other is extended into space and grabs the objects.

Linking students directly to astronauts aboard the space station provides unique, authentic experiences created to enhance student learning, performance and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The station has a spare LEE stored outside the ISS, which the astronauts retrieved to make the fix. While this will be the first-ever spacewalk of the latter, it will mark the third one of Bresnik.

The next two spacewalks, on October 10 and October 18, will focus on lubricating the joints in the new LEE using a device called a ballscrew lubrication tool, or BLT.
