Whole Foods investigating credit card hack

Whole Food stores nationally saw a 10% increase in traffic in August compared with monthly averages for 2017, according to location-based data compiled by the inMarket mobile analytics firm. Others are in Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston Salem, Burlington and Asheville.

Bad news for those who have dined or had drinks at Whole Foods: the Amazon-owned organic grocery store chain on Thursday disclosed a security breach that may have compromised your credit card information.

More than 40 Whole Foods stores sell beer on tap and restaurants are common in its stores, including those in the Triangle.

This is just the latest in what seems like a hurricane season of cyber crimes.

The supermarket chain said it recently received information about unauthorized access of payment card information in some stores.

The cyberattack hit Whole Foods' taprooms and restaurants, not their checkout lines, the company said. Not much is known about the possible breach at this time, aside from the fact that it affects payment cards.

Whole Foods Market store in Sacramento, California. Both are said to run on different systems to Whole Food's retail grocery POS terminals, which were not affected by the hack, and none of the systems are in any way connected to Amazon.com systems.

Major corporations that have faced large data breaches in recent years include Yahoo, Verizon, Walmart, Anthem, Myspace and LinkedIn.

Segmentation has always been highlighted by security experts as being a best practice to help organizations limit the damage they face in the event that they get breached (see 5 Secrets to Security Success). The breach only affected in-store taprooms and restaurants payment systems. Amazon didn't respond to requests for comment.
