US Defence Secy. Jim Mattis to visit India next week

Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made the country's stance on Afghanistan clear to her visiting us counterpart James Mattis during the delegation-level talks in the national capital.

Meanwhile Mr Mattis is the first high-ranking official of the Trump administration to visit India and the USA has been wanting Indian military presence in Afghanistan.

Mattis, who landed in New Delhi on Monday morning, is the first cabinet member from Trump administration to visit in India.

"In this context, we agreed that the full implementation of the understanding reached following the announcement by the U.S. past year recognising India as a Major Defence Partner will provide further energy and momentum to our collaboration on defence technology and manufacturing". She made India's stand clear after holding wide-ranging parleys with her visiting USA counterpart James Mattis here.

India has already extended a $3 billion aid to Afghanistan while continuously increasing trade relations with the mountainous country.

Mattis also appreciated India's leadership in the Indian Ocean and sought to work together to build a resilient regional architecture. India also recently agreed to expand its support for Afghan defense forces, which includes training of Afghan army personnel.

Indian Ambassador to United States Navtej Sarna said that the India-U.S. relationship have been transformed into a global partnership.

"These will continue. These engagements will continue", Sitharaman told Mattis, but "there shall be no boots on the ground in Afghanistan".

Mattis is expected to come bearing the news of several key defence deals for India, and go back with a better understanding of the situation in South Asia when it comes to terrorism.

After the previous Obama administration accorded India the status of major defence partner which was reaffirmed by the current US President Donald Trump, India has now acquired greater access to US defence technology.
