A police spokesman said Najar who had been active since 1999 had split from the Hizbul Mujahideen to form his own group Lashkar-e-Islam after a falling out in 2015.

Abdul Qayoom Najar alias Janshab, Abid, Wazeer and Qayoom chacha was the son of Abdul Ahad Najar of Batpora Sopore. "Najar joined the militant ranks again after being released in 1995". "There were other problems as well", he said.

At that time hitherto, unknown Lashkar- e-Islam posters surfaced in the town considered as the support base of Geelani.

Najar is believed to have adopted a different operational module, besides having expertise in topography of the area, he operated in.

The officials say that Najar didn't like intervention from Hurriyat leaders in militancy as he felt his writ was being challenged by the separatist leadership.
