Aaron Hernandez had severe case of CTE

The doctor who studied Hernandez's brain at the CTE Center at Boston University found that he was suffering from stage 3 CTE, only one stage below the most severe stage four.

Hernandez's form of CTE was "the most severe case they had ever seen in someone of Aaron's age", Jose Baez, Hernandez's attorney told The Times.

Aaron Hernandez committed suicide in April in a CT prison while serving a life sentence for murder.

The disease can be diagnosed only by taking brain tissue from a dead subject and has been found in athletes including Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau and Pro Bowl safety Dave Duerson, both of whom committed suicide.

TMZ Sports reports that Hernandez's fiancee is suing the Patriots saying they failed to adequately warn and protect Hernandez from the brain disease. As a result, the courts hit Aaron with charges of first-degree murder leading to life in prison and no chance of parole. According to Boston University, common symptoms include "memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, suicidality, parkinsonism, and eventually progressive dementia".

Serving out a life sentence Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Massachusetts, Hernandez committed suicide this past April.

Hernandez, 27, played for the New England Patriots.

Hernandez stopped playing football at the age of 23.

"If we have to be groundbreakers in this area it's something we're prepared to do", said Baez. The league won't admit that the game is unsafe and it has already forked over $1 billion in a separate settlement with families of players who suffered brain damage.
