Georgia Tech Campus Police Fatally Shoot LGBTQ Student-Activist

Schultz suffered from depression and had previously tried to commit suicide, the student's mother, Lynne Schultz, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Campus police at a university in the U.S. state of Georgia have shot and killed an LGBTQ student activist who they say was advancing on officers with a knife.

Scout Shultz, 21, was shot after being involved in a standoff with police at the Georgia Institute of Technology campus in Atlanta late on Saturday. An alert was issued for people to stay indoors as things got heated.

WSB-TVs Justin Wilfon reported that at least one officer sustained a head injury and was loaded into the back of an ambulance. Fellow students rushing to her aid as she's pinned to the ground. He said police restored order relatively quickly, and three people were arrested and charged with inciting a riot and battery of an officer. Schultz failed to comply with the demand and moved toward officers. Officers arrived at the scene, and found an individual with what they described as a knife. Scout, who was gender nonbinary and preferred not to be identified with masculine pronouns, had attempted suicide two years previously.

The officer is seen continuing to back up, eventually moving behind a parking barricade, pleading, "Nobody wants to hurt you, man".

A peaceful vigil for LGBTI student activist turned violent on Monday night.

"We are all deeply saddened by what has occurred", the Pride Alliance said in a statement on its website.

Stewart claimed that Scout was holding a utility tool with the knife blade retracted.

Finally, a gunshot was heard, and the student screamed wildly.

Stewart said the officer who shot Schultz had overreacted and should have handled the situation better because Schultz was having a breakdown and was suicidal. "Our goal is to work diligently to make positive change at Georgia Tech in an effort to ensure a safer campus for all students", said Chris Stewart, a lawyer for the family.

"I mean things happen off campus, but it's kind of shaking for it to happen right so close to home", one of the students, who witnessed the incident, said.

The Pride Alliance released an emotional statement on its website on September 17, saying "they have been the driving force behind Pride Alliance for the past two years".

Schultz's parents have questioned the officer's use of lethal force.

Video shows an officer with his gun drawn saying, "Come on man, let's drop the knife".
