Suu Kyi breaks silence 'feels deeply for suffering people'

"The government still needs to find out what the real problems are", Suu Kyi had said, in a nationally televised address, the first since an army crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim minority community was branded as "ethnic cleansing" by the United Nations.

The Guardian quoted her as saying, "I am aware of the fact that the world's attention is focused on the situation in Rakhine state. Government has been making every effort to restore peace and stability and to bring harmony in Rakhine communities", she continued. She added the responsibility to establish peace lies with the government.

Last week, Michael Fallon, the defence secretary, said the violence against Rohingya Muslims was "obviously unacceptable" but refused to confirm the programme was ending.

Suu Kyi, 72, is banned from the presidency by the military-drafted constitution because her children have British citizenship.

Her government needed to find out "what the real problems are", the State Counselor added, referring to "allegations and counter-allegations", but claimed that her nation "does not fear worldwide scrutiny".

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told Reuters she wanted to hear Suu Kyi offer a solution "to what is a tragedy of enormous proportions".

Between August 25 and September 14 alone, there havebeen arson attacks on 62 villages in Northern Rakhine.

Until now, the head of State had given an unswerving support to the army, despite the accusations of abuses against the Rohingyas under the pretext of counter-terrorism operation.

However, the Nobel peace prize victor also sought to create an impression that the prevailing tensions in the Rakhine State were largely the result of violence initiated against the Myanmar security establishment by "armed Muslims and the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA)".

"We condemn all human rights violations and unlawful violence", Suu Kyi added.

Bangladesh the nearest neighbouring country has already hosted 4,00,000 Rohingyas before the latest uproar occurred in Myanmar and are still providing refugee camps and makeshift settlements.
