Massive WWII bomb defused in Frankfurt

The city's fire service helped evacuate around 500 elderly people from their care homes, while emergency crews evacuated babies and intensive care patients from two hospitals.

Just the day before, authorities evacuated 20,000 in preparation to defuse a US-made bomb in the city of Koblenz.

Residents were ordered to leave after the device was found during construction work in a wealthy suburb of the city.

A steady flow of people filed into a temporary shelter at Frankfurt's trade fair site, with bananas and beverages on offer.

On Sunday morning, the local media revealed that police had cordoned off the 1.5km (1 mile) evacuation area as residents carrying luggage vacated the danger zone.

"At 6:30 p.m. local time, the Frankfurt police posted on Twitter "[The bomb] has been successfully defused".

The HC 4000 bomb is believed to have been dropped by Britain's Royal Airforce in World War II.

Patients at a nearby hospital have also been evacuated ahead of the explosion.

In a show of public spirit, museums are opening their doors for free to provide evacuees with a place to spend the day.
