Nest's Thermostat E has many new features at Cheaper Price

Alphabet's home automation company Nest has released the latest in its connected thermostat line with the unveiling of the Nest Thermostat E.

The E is Nest's first new product since May, and the first totally new thermostat since 2011. And, Nest is keen to point out, the ever-growing number of rebates that utility companies are offering for smart home devices means that you could effectively get the thermostat for free. But the Nest E provides most of the same functionality, and it provides the same energy savings. It comes with a preset schedule to help you get started out of the box, but it's capable of learning your comings and goings and adjusting the temperature accordingly, just like the Learning Thermostat. The new Nest E can do nearly everything the regular Nest can do, save for a feature called "farsight" that allows the thermostat to detect when you're across the room, and then turn on the display to indicate the time or temperature. The company hopes with the Nest E that for many people that answer will soon become "one". There are only six wires, compared to the original Nest's 10, which means HVAC compatibility drops from "95 percent of systems" to "85 percent".

The Nest Thermostat E costs just $169 and has been given a fresh look over the original Nest Thermostat. The effect makes the screen look grey when the display is off. The display shows softly glowing text and graphics, and when off, the frosted display fades into the background. To that end, it also drops some of its nice extras: it won't be moonlighting as a clock in its downtime, for starters, and while it still works with 85% of United States households, a pruning of the wiring means that's a 10% decline from the third generation Nest. But you can still have it learn your schedule over time. It is also "Easy on the eyes" and "Energy efficient", Nest says. By using smart technology, which eventually teaches the Nest thermostat to predict what temperature setting you'd like your home to be at during different times of the day.

The Thermostat E is also a little less flexible than its metallic counterpart. That includes support for Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant, though users of Apple's HomeKit platform are still out of luck.

The company is planning to save up to 100 billion KWh which would be sufficient for providing electricity to every house in the NY state for two years.
