Boko Haram Insurgency: US Sells N181bn Warplanes, Weapons To Nigeria

Osinbajo on Tuesday via his Twitter handle, said the decision would aid Nigeria's fight against the insurgency in the North-east.

According to Reuters, the Pentagon communicated the sale of the 12 ground attack aircraft valued at $593m (N181bn) to the US Congress on Monday, August 28.

The aircraft are reportedly equipped with "wing-mounted machine guns, weapons integration with advanced surveillance. precision-guided bombs, and even air-to-air missiles".

"Among the issues of particular interest to the United States officials will be the fight against Boko Haram and the humanitarian situation in north-eastern Nigeria", the USA embassy said.

The U.S. Government for the first time has agreed in principle to sell arms to help in the fight against insurgency in the country.

Saraki however said talks are still on going before the arrangement is properly tied with Nigeria expected to meet its own end of the bargain especially as it concerns its human rights record.

However, the August 30 test had been planned for a long time and before North Korea's latest missile launch. Wednesday's move by the US came after a series of North Korean missile tests and threats by Kim Jong Un.

He said, "We have come to show our support to the Nigerian soldiers in the counter insurgency operation in the northeast Nigeria".

The U.S. Department of Defence has notified its Congress of the sale of 12 Super Tucano A-29 planes and weapons worth $593 million to Nigeria for the fight against Boko Haram.
