Canadian runners share tributes to David Torrence after sudden death

Torrence was born in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in Los Angeles, but he competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics for Peru, his mother's native country.

Torrence, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene in the Scottsdale, Arizona apartment complex where he was staying.

Emergency responders were called to the Center Court Condominiums near Scottsdale and Thomas roads around 7:30 a.m. after staff found a man at the bottom of the pool. "Detectives learned that there were no obvious signs of foul play".

He represented the United States for years but last year was cleared to compete for Peru, on the basis of having a Peruvian mother.

Torrence won silver medals at the 2014 IAAF World Relay Championships and the 2015 Pan American Games.

The athlete hailed from California and came to Scottsdale to train a few weeks ago. As a representative of Peru, Torrence set records in the mile run and the 1,500-meter race, according to the Malibu Times.
