Kim Wall case: Danish inventor to face murder charge over journalist's death

Ms Wall's headless torso was later found naked and a search is being conducted for her clothes, Danish police said.

'We also found blood in the submarine and there is a match, ' officer Moeller Jensen said.

Metal was also found attached to the body, which police presume was put there to ensure that it would sink.

Wall was last seen alive August 10 on the submarine, UC3 Nautilus, which sank off the east coast of Denmark the following day.

Gathering at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in NY for a candlelight vigil Wednesday, former classmates sang "Stand by Me" and recalled Wall's distinctive reporting, charm and humor.

Wall, who was researching a story on inventor Peter Madsen, went missing after he took her out to sea in his 17-metre (56-foot) submarine on August 10. Madsen, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter and pleaded not guilty, maintained that her death was an accident.

Posting to Facebook, Kim's mum Ingrid wrote: "It is with boundless sorrow and dismay that we received the news that the remains of our daughter and sister Kim wall have been found..."

"We're trying to focus on her life and legacy now beyond the details that have so many unanswered questions", Jose said.

Wall met Madsen at his Copenhagen submarine dock at around 7pm and she boarded the Nautilus.

A cyclist discovered her torso on Monday. It was then that the outside world learnt Madsen's version of events - that an accident occurred on board, Wall died and Madsen "buried" her at sea somewhere in Koge Bay, about 50km south of Copenhagen.

It resurfaced at around 10.30am, but sank soon afterwards and Madsen was rescued by the Danish Navy as it went down. Not only did the sub seem to have been deliberately sunk, a witness, Kristian Isbak, told Danish press, "There was no panic at all".

Wall's family noted that it was unimaginable that the intrepid reporter - who had worked in hotspots across the globe - would meet her fate "just a few miles from the childhood home".

Danish inventor Peter Madsen has been arrested over the death.

Wall was a graduate of Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, based between NY and China. Her body was found in waters off Denmark on 21 August and has now been formally identified.

About the time Madsen, 46, was giving his account to the court, police were alerted that a human torso had washed ashore, its limbs and head cut off. DNA analysis showed the remains to be those of Wall.

"Kim (was) always on the road, always working on new stories somewhere in the world, but she talked about how much she wanted to be based in Beijing", Cong, 26, said.

The Sweden-born Wall studied at the Sorbonne university in Paris, the London School of Economics and Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism, where she graduated with a master's in 2013.
