Planet marks new highs for heat, pollutants, sea level

In its latest reporting of a so-called leaked climate assessment the New York Times relies on exaggerated statements and false allegations of cover-ups in order to push an agenda.

Trump has previously dismissed climate change as "a hoax".

"It was uploaded to a nonprofit internet digital library in January but received little attention until it was published by The New York Times", the corrected NYT article reads.

The authors of the report found that most of the indicators of climate change continue to "follow the trend of warming" and the indicators of surface temperatures of ocean and land, sea level and the level of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere have broken records in 2015.

The 299-page report, written by scientists around the world and published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, shows that 2016 was "very extreme and it is a cause for concern", said co-editor Jessica Blunden, a NOAA climate scientist.

The report said that through greenhouse-gas emissions and widespread deforestation, humans were conducting an "unprecedented experiment" with the climate system.

Unnamed scientists told TheNYT they feared the Trump administration would suppress the climate report.

In reality, the "suppressed" report went through a public comment period for almost three months during which anyone on earth could read it.

On Monday, all three networks pounced on the story, speculating about the Trump administration's nefarious plans. He said that while federal reports documenting the extent of climate change might not capture the public's attention, they can help persuade local officials to better prepare for future storms, floods and other challenges.

"I don't think the public is in the dark" about the scientific consensus on climate change, said Luke Popovich, vice president of the National Mining Association, which represents coal companies.

The report says it is "extremely likely" that human activity is the "dominant cause" of recent warming - adding there is "no convincing alternative explanation". This month, he formally notified the United Nations that the US will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, reneging on the nation's commitment to reducing heat-trapping pollutants.

El Niños are weather phenomena that warm the Pacific Ocean and pump lots of excess heat into the atmosphere, raising temperatures. Many of those agencies are now headed by climate-science deniers and fossil-fuel proponents.

Sea surface temperatures were also the highest on record and have increased by 1.62 degrees between 2000 and 2016.

Via Climate Central: "The 2016 average temperature for the contiguous USA was 54.9°F, which was 2.2°F above the 1981-2010 average, this is the second warmest since records began".

"This is basically like an annual physical of the climate system", said report co-editor Deke Arndt, NOAA's climate monitoring chief. In this study Urban assessed 131 existing studies in scientific literature investigating extinction risk under anthropogenic climate change.

The Times originally claimed they had "exclusively obtained" the report - presumably through a government leaker - and were the first to report on it.
