John Kerry says Kenya's vote system appears "strong" amid fraud claims

Opposition leader Raila Odinga had 44.3 percent, a margin of almost 1.4 million votes. "The streets do not".

Preliminary presidential election results project a convincing win for incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta but the opposition leader Raila Odinga has cried foul, claiming "fraud" in the election process, which began on Tuesday.

Raila Odinga, presidential candidate for Kenya's National Super Alliance, NASA, has described as "sham, fictitious and fake", results of the on-going presidential election in the country.

At least three people have been shot dead in election violence in Kenya, as the country awaits the results of Tuesday's poll.

As of 1900 GMT, provisional results from the election commission website put Kenyatta in front with 54.3 percent of votes counted to 44.8 percent for Odinga - a margin of 1.4 million ballots with 97 percent of polling stations reported.

He therefore called on all with questions on the conduct of the election to exercise restraint and await an account from the - Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), stressing the imperative need for the IEBC to give a detailed account of the process. "We commend the IEBC for ensuring that overall law and order prevailed throughout the electoral process observed", said Rugumayo.

Its chairman Wafula Chebukati added: 'For now, I can not say whether or not the system has been hacked'.

The comments from Mr Kerry, who was speaking for the Carter Centre which had observers at 400 locations around the country, came ahead of a press conference called by Mr Odinga, who has refused to rule out violence if he is declared the loser.

Mr Odinga claimed hackers had used the identity of Christopher Msando, an election official tortured and killed last month. Multiple people have reportedly been killed as a result of the unrest.

But there were clashes in his hometown of Kisumu, with police firing tear gas at protesters.

"Even if I am celebrating, let me celebrate in a way that will not provoke the other person because if I celebrate in a way that provokes another person, that escalates that feeling of people fighting of which we don't want", said Otieno.
