China protests USA warship approaching Meiji reef

The U.S has dared China as its USS John S McCain Naval warship passed close to an artificial reef created by China in the South China Sea, prompting a protest from China.

According to a USA defense official, the us destroyer was planning to sail within 6 nautical miles of Mischief Reef, one of Beijing's man-made islands.

China's foreign ministry said the operation had violated global and Chinese law and seriously harmed Beijing's sovereignty and security.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano claimed Tuesday the Philippines did not want to mention land reclamation in the Joint Communiqué of the foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as China is no longer reclaiming land.

"It is clear who is not willing to see stability in the South China Sea and who is the major factor pushing for militarisation in the South China Sea", the spokesperson said.

The ruling invalidated Beijing's claim to sovereignty over large swaths of the South China Sea.

Beijing claims nearly the entirety of the South China Sea, has deployed naval units and has reclaimed land from the sea to expand its presence, sparking protests from its neighbours.

AMTI said China continued to reclaim in the Paracel Islands.

The US says it supports none of the nations' claims in the area and insists that the sea should be a neutral space available for free navigation.

China, which claims the South China Sea virtually in entirety, has protested such repeated USA military operations, which President Donald Trump's administration has continued partly to reassure allies locked in territorial rifts with Beijing. China has reportedly installed a missile defense system on the new islands.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies' Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) wrote in an analysis just after November's USA presidential election that the FONOP location most directly related to enforcement of the arbitration court ruling was Mischief Reef, which was found to be a low-tide elevation that does not generate an entitlement to a territorial sea, exclusive economic zone or continental shelf.

But Nicole Schwegman, spokeswoman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said that United States forces operated in the Asia Pacific region on a daily basis. United States officials say the military will continue to sail, fly and operate wherever permitted by global law.

"They called and said "please turn around, you are in our waters", the official said.

However, on Friday, China's Foreign Ministry protested against the voyage of the United States naval vessel in what it keeps claiming are Chinese territorial waters. To China's dismay, Vietnam also pushed Asean to express concern about "extended construction" in the area.

An analysis by Washington's Centre for Strategic and International Studies found the volume of global shipping transiting through the South China Sea was less than previously thought, and put the real figure at $US3.3 trillion ($4.2 trillion).
