An Anti-Diversity Document Written by a Google Employee Went "Internally Viral"

In the employee memo, the author says men have a higher drive for status, pushing them into tech and leadership positions that require "long, stressful hours" while "women on average look for more work-life balance". Written by a senior software engineer, "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber" calls for an end to diversity initiatives that aim to account for various historical imbalances.

The person who wrote the document argued that the representation gap between men and women in software engineering persists because of biological differences between the two sexes, according to public tweets from Google employees.

The author accuses Google of fostering a "politically correct monoculture that maintains its hold by shaming dissenters into silence" and argues it should find "non-discriminatory ways to reduce the gender gap".

"Google has taken a strong stand on this issue, by releasing its demographic data and creating a company-wide OKR on diversity and inclusion. I'm not going to link to it here as it's not a viewpoint that I or this company endorses, promotes or encourages", wrote Brown.

In it, the author outlines how men and women differ biologically - and how the company's diversity efforts should be examined in regards to its "costs and benefits".

The author wrote that he believed that women were less interested in coding careers because they preferred jobs involving "people and aesthetics", and that the low number of women in "high stress jobs" is down to them having more "neuroticism".

Google's recently hired vice president of diversity, integrity and governance, Danielle Brown, sent a memo in response to the furore.

He said the company needs to be more open to conservative ideals. The goal of the memo was to persuade Google to abandon certain diversity-related practices the engineer found objectionable and to convince co-workers to join his cause, or at least discuss the points he raised.

"While acknowledging that "(d) iversity and inclusion are a fundamental part of our values and the culture we continue to cultivate", Brown also criticized the employee memo, saying "it advanced incorrect assumptions about gender". In it's latest diversity report, Google CEO Sundar Pichai is is quoted as saying that "a diverse mix of voices leads to better discussions, decisions, and outcomes for everyone".

Google is already under investigation by the US Department of Labor, "which has found that Google routinely pays women less than men in comparable roles", says Gizmodo.

A few days later, tech sector investor Dave McClure confessed to being "a creep" for making "advances towards multiple women in work-related situations, where it was clearly inappropriate".
