Circuit House echoes with need to ban nuclear weapons

Japanese city Hiroshima on Sunday marked the 72nd anniversary of World War II atomic bombing that killed 140,000 people.

Three days later, the USA dropped a second atomic bomb on another Japanese city, Nagasaki, effectively ending World War II.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, however, defended the decision to stay out by saying that "a realistic approach" is needed to reach the goal of having a world without nuclear weapons.

"For us to truly pursue a world without nuclear weapons, we need participation from both nuclear-weapon and non-nuclear-weapon states", Abe said in his speech.

A number of speakers also talked about the United Nations last month adopting an global treaty banning nuclear weapons. But Japan, along with the nine nuclear-armed nations, including the United States, refused to take part in the negotiations and the vote.

During the ceremony, Matsui, joined by bereaved family members, placed the names of hibakusha atomic bomb survivors who died over the past year into the Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims.

Three days later, another atomic bombing in Nagasaki killed more than 70,000 people.

The anniversary came after Japan sided last month with nuclear powers Britain, France and the United States to dismiss a United Nations treaty banning atomic weapons, which was rejected by critics for ignoring the reality of security threats such as North Korea.

Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic attacks.

Last year, then-President Obama became the first US president to visit Hiroshima, where he called for an end to nuclear weapons.

On Sunday, U.N. Secretary General António Guterres issued a message calling for the United States and other nuclear-armed countries to do more to rid the world of nuclear weapons. "Thousands of American lives lost", Trump tweeted.

Graphically depicting the horror of atom bomb, along with NSS volunteers of SNDT University and University of Mumbai, school students, social activists and peace-loving citizens in the city marched for peace and a nuclear-free world.
