Explainer: What does empanelling a US grand jury mean?

It is alleged that #Russia interfered in the USA presidential election with a view to bolstering the campaign of Trump against Hillary The grand jury has issued subpoenas concerning a June 2016 meeting between President Donald Trump's son and a Russian lawyer.

The subpoena seeks both documents and testimony from people involved in the meeting last july at the Trump Tower in Manhattan, CNN quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying on Thursday night.

Republicans and Trump can keep trying to live in a world of denial by pretending like the Russian Federation investigation does not exist, but Robert Meuller and his grand jury are very real.

NBC News has not independently verified the Journal report. A top Trump White House lawyer told reporters he wasn't aware of the move.

Ty Cobb, one of Trump's lawyers, told the paper he was unaware of the DC grand jury and added: "The White House favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of [the special counsel's] work fairly".

Trump's Own National Security Advisor Has Debunked Trump Smear of Susan Rice
There is little in the public record about Cohen-Watnick, though he reportedly survived a previous McMaster attempt to remove him. Cohen-Watnick, 31, was originally brought on board by former NSC chief Gen.

However, he has a hard time admitting that Russian Federation interfered with the election, a fact that his own intelligence agencies have confirmed.

As the Journal notes, a separate grand jury in Alexandria, VA, had already been convened prior to Mueller's appointment to look into former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn's work on behalf of foreign governments.

Sekulow said he believed Trump's business deals dating back years were outside the scope of the investigation. Mueller has the authority to investigate any matters that "arose or may arise directly from the investigation", according to Rosenstein's order appointing Mueller as special counsel. A grand jury technically plays no role in an impeachment process.

Trump has denied that he or any members of his team colluding with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential campaign.

In this case, Mueller's impaneling of a grand jury suggests he thinks there is enough evidence to release subpoenas in the first place. United States intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian Federation attempted to sway the presidential contest in Trump's favor. It is unclear whether the subpoenas issued in recent weeks relate to other members of Trump's campaign who have been a focus of the Mueller investigation, including Paul J. Manafort, the former campaign chairman.
