Travel hell for Irish holidaymakers as tough new security checks kick in

The measures came in in March after the Paris and Brussels terror attacks.

Brussels has introduced new passport checks have been introduced for United Kingdom residents and other citizens of non-Schengen countries following the terror attacks across Europe.

Airlines for Europe (A4E), a coalition of carriers such as British Airways, EasyJet and Air France-KLM, have issued a statement criticizing several major airports in the continent over "huge delays".

European Union officials say the checks follow the Brussels and Paris terror attacks as visitors are run through databases to see if they pose a threat.

He added: "At some airports, flight delays have increased by 300 per cent compared to previous year - member states must take the responsibility for this".

Passengers have faced queues of up to four hours at airport arrivals and departures at popular British holiday destinations including Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Lisbon, Lyon, Paris-Orly, Milan and Brussels, Airlines for Europe (A4E) has said.

Tourists have complained of the immigration lines that were "hundreds of metres long" with a wait time of up to four hours.

United States' planned sanctions against Russian Federation contrary to global law: Germany
Gabriel recalled that US President Donald Trump "has not yet made a decision on whether or not tougher sanctions will be imposed on Russian Federation ".

Many travellers said they were unaware of the long queues and the extra time needed to get through some airports.

It came as Ryanair, Europe's busiest airline, admitted that nearly a quarter of its flights had run late over a 24-hour period this week because passengers could not get through security to board flights to the UK.

The delays are down to heightened security checks which are causing delays at European borders.

People are being warned to check what terminal they are flying from, arrive in plenty of time for their flights and to expect large crowds in the airport.

The scope and duration of such a temporary reintroduction of border control at the internal borders is limited in time and should be restricted to the bare minimum needed to respond to the threat in question.

"More checks can lead to more delays, and that is the price for security".

And he appeared to blame this week's chaos on airport authorities, particularly in southern Europe, that have failed to prepare for the stringent new checks - despite having had two years'warning. Phil Davis, whose flight home from Frankfurt yesterday was delayed by 90 minutes, said the airport only had one security lane open to process a large number of global flights.
