United States' planned sanctions against Russian Federation contrary to global law: Germany

Gabriel recalled that US President Donald Trump "has not yet made a decision on whether or not tougher sanctions will be imposed on Russian Federation".

But the sanctions bill represents the first time Washington has attempted to force its opposition to the pipeline on European allies through punitive measures.

Speaking to a German newspaper group in an interview published Monday, Germany's Minister for Economics and Energy Brigitte Zypries said that "we see [the sanctions] as being against worldwide law, plain and simple", The Local reported.

Speaking to the Funke Mediengruppe newspaper chain, she said, "We consider this as being against global law, plain and simple...."

As Moscow expels hundreds of United States diplomats in angry response to new sanctions, Washington's move is also exposing deep divisions in the European Union over energy policy and a major Russian-led pipeline project in the Baltic Sea.

European leaders say the sanctions will jeopardize their energy security and hurt their economies.

"The U.S. has left the common line it had with Europe for sanctions against Russia", Zypries told ARD television last week, adding that by not coordinating with Europe on the matter, there was a risk that German companies would be harmed.

Of particular concern to European energy firms is Nord Stream 2, a pipeline project to pump Russian natural gas via the Baltic Sea to landfall in Germany. "He has a possibility to discuss these sanctions with us, to take into account European interests", DPA quoted him as saying during a visit in Belgium.

"The Americans can not punish German companies because they are doing business in another country", Zypries told Germany's Funke media group.

Previously, the latest round of sanctions has been criticized by various officials in Europe, including Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern and German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel.

Junker said nothing about European Union sanctions against the US.

Germany's economy minister called on the European Union to begin looking into countermeasures against Washington's latest sanctions against Russian Federation.

Europeans are concerned about the fact that the U.S. is planning, through these measures, to impose restrictions on cooperation with Russian companies on pipeline construction and prioritize exports of United States energy resources to Europe. "This is possible only when we are united and act together".
