"There has been an explosion at the gate of Jawadya mosque in Herat city, possibly caused by a auto bomb".

Herat police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada said the assault happened around 8:00 pm (1530 GMT) when "a terrorist attack was carried out on a (Shiite) mosque in the third security district of Herat city". The casualties were caused after an assailant detonated his explosives when he was prevented from entering al-Zahra mosque in western Kabul.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.

The toll was likely to rise as many among the injured remained in critical condition.

Shiites are a minority in Afghanistan and have been threatened by the affiliate of the Islamic State group that operates in the country's east. Herat borders Iran whose capital Tehran was attacked by the so-called Islamic State in June.
