USA tests missile defense after North Korean ballistic launch

"In addition to successfully intercepting the target, the data collected will allow the Missile Defense Agency to enhance the THAAD weapon system", he said.

United States forces tested the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in Alaska by launching a ballistic missile over the Pacific Ocean, according to the United States military.

On July 11, the US test-fired its THAAD anti-ballistic missile system from Kodiak Island, successfully intercepting a target missile launched from an Air Force Cargo plane north of Hawaii, according to Fox News.

The standoff between Pyongyang and Washington escalated earlier this week after Pyongyang test-launched a Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), firing it into the Sea of Japan.

The U.S. military, which detected and tracked the missile throughout its flight, determined it posed no threat to North America.

Hours later, the US then flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after the North Korean missile tests, the Air Force said in a statement on Sunday.

The United States says it successfully shot down a medium-range target ballistic missile using an interception system it hopes to set up on the Korean peninsula.

Gen. Sam Greaves said that the exercise will help the U.S.to stay ahead of the evolving threat. The last time the USA tested THAAD, earlier this month, it said it successfully intercepted an intermediate-range missile target.

Lockheed Martin Corp, contractor for the THAAD system, said it can intercept incoming missiles both inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere.

The U.S. Army launched the missile Sunday over the Pacific Ocean.

He assured that the US will take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the American homeland and protect its allies in the region.

China has been notified of the move to speed up the deployment, the South's presidential Blue House said.

North Korea said the United States should regard its latest test as a "grave warning", Pyongyang's Korean Central News Agency said in a statement. South Korea had earlier deployed two such units but the rest were delayed due to environmental concerns.
