He tweeted: "Situation report from FNB Soweto derby: Stampede reported with multiple injuries, 2 confirmed fatal".

It is unclear at this stage exactly what lead to the stampede, but Sun explains there are allegations that the selling of fake tickets at the gates "caused a stir and therefore resulted in the stampede".

He said the police were investigating the cause of the stampede.

"This is extremely unfortunate as solid security plans were in place to ensure that this is a risk-free event".

Local journalists posted images of the scene on Twitter.
