One dead in knife attack in Hamburg supermarket

The police spokeswoman said the motive for the attack was still under investigation.

Germany has been on high alert about the threat of a jihadist attack since Amri's rampage in Berlin, for which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

The official noted that despite being considered ato be an Islamist, the man was not viewed as risky.

Two German security officials said the suspect in the Hamburg knife attack was on the radar screen for expressing pro-jihadi views. They declined to say whether the attack was being treated as a terrorist incident.

He won't talk because of a head injury sustained during the attack, Froehlich said, adding that the case will go to the federal prosecutor. The attacker, who was acting alone, was lightly injured as he was caught, they said.

Bild published a photo on Twitter of the attacker in the back of the police vehicle. The man was then arrested by plainclothes police officers.

But Friday's attack is sure to draw parallels to the December 19 truck attack on a Berlin Christmas market carried out by Anis Amri that killed 12 and wounded dozens. Der Tagesspiegel, a daily based in Berlin, said the suspect was of Palestinian ethnicity and had come to Germany seeking asylum.

According to German newspaper Bild, the man cried "Allahu Akbar" while he carried out the attack. Nothing was found, police said.

He then walked inside and unwrapped a brand new kitchen knife with an 8-inch blade and began "brutally" attacking a pair of men, including the 50-year-old who died at the scene.

The assailant made his way out of the store in the Barmbek district and wounded four more people as he fled - also getting injured himself in the process - but Hamburg police quickly caught up to him.

Mr Froehlich said authorities intend to ask that he be held in custody on suspicion of murder and five counts of attempted murder, but may seek to have him held at a psychiatric unit instead.

Police searched a refugee shelter where the 26-year-old was believed to have been staying, but nothing was found.
