Iran successfully launches satellite carrier in low orbit

The sanctions, announced jointly by the Justice, State and Treasury departments, designated 18 individuals and entities that the administration said were involved in activities that included missile development, software theft and weapons procurement.

"The Imam Khomeini Space Centre was officially opened with the successful test of the Simorgh (Phoenix) space launch vehicle", state television said. The U.S. said Thursday that such a rocket is inherently created to be able to carry a nuclear warhead. Officials in Israel and the United States fear Iran could use the technology to produce long-range missiles that could pose a threat to the region, and beyond, if they help Iran develop intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The launch comes as the United States has criticised Iran's ballistic missile tests.

She over-corrected, causing the vehicle to swerve across lanes, crash through a wire fence and overturn into a field. The driver's younger sister, Jacqueline Sanchez , was ejected from the vehicle and killed in the incident.

Iranian state television described the launch as involving a "Simorgh" rocket that is capable of carrying a satellite weighing 250 kilograms (550 pounds). On Thursday, Iranian media reported that the space rocket had been successfully tested for the first time. The country also planned to send humans into orbit, yet it was abandoned due to high costs. "Believe me", Trump stated earlier this week regarding Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal. The site has been designed and built by the experts of the defense ministry.

Mr Kripowicz said Iran's satellites technology "could be configured to be an ICBM".

Just like Iran's previous satellite launches, the latest move drew widespread criticism from the West, with the USA describing the move as a "provocative action" that violated the "spirit" of 2015 nuclear deal struck between Iran and world powers. "Iran will not stop the missile projects".
