Corporation that owns Wolf Creek targeted by hackers since May

Although hackers have successfully penetrated computers belonging to employees at companies controlling nuclear facilities, they have not been successful in making the jump from a single computer to a facility's operating or security systems.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security said there's now no threat to the public. However, the attackers allegedly attempted to map out targets' networks for future intrusions.

Bloomberg reports that Russian Federation is a chief suspect in the hacking, though other outlets did not name a potential source of the attacks and some analysts warn attribution is premature.

Last week, Reuters said hackers have been using phishing emails in an attempt to "harvest credentials" for various energy sector networks. The Wolf Creek nuclear power plant is near Burlington, about an hour south of Topeka.

"There was absolutely no operational impact to Wolf Creek", Wolf Creek spokeswoman Jenny Hageman told Bloomberg.

The authorities blamed an "advanced persistent threat" actor for the activity, which is usually taken to mean a state-sponsored group.

We do however suspect others were either aware of or complicit in the knowledge of this attack. It is said to be liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Libyan authorities.

Both publications, citing security experts and US officials, said the attacks could be used to disrupt the power grid, and DHS and the Federal Bureau of Investigation sent out a warning to utility companies on June 28 about the potential for hacking.

The initial DHS report did not say how many firms were targeted or what the hackers' motives were and added the origin of the hack was unknown.

In 2008, an attack called Stuxnet that was designed by the United States and Israel to hit Iran's main nuclear enrichment facility, demonstrated how computer attacks could disrupt and destroy physical infrastructure.

Nuclear and energy plants have recently come under threat from hackers.

But cybersecurity experts say that once a system is breached in any way - even if it's not on the operational side - nuclear safety could be at risk down the road. E&E reports numerous attackers used a "watering hole" technique, where they plant malicious code on websites likely to be visited by workers.
