Driver arrested after vehicle hits barriers outside French mosque

French newpaper Le Parisien reports that he told police he was trying to "avenge (terror attacks at) the Bataclan and the Champs-Elysees".

"The suspect was driving a 4×4 vehicle and reportedly repeatedly struck the blocks and gates protecting the mosque", Xinhua news agency quoted the police as saying.

French police arrested a man who unsuccessfully tried to ram his vehicle into a crowd outside a Paris mosque.

The man's crowd plowing attempt was apparently thwarted by barriers put up to protect the mosque.

Witnesses say the man eventually crashed his vehicle into another auto and drove off.

No one was injured in the horror attack as the vehicle struck barriers put in place to protect pedestrians.

"We saw the auto go three times around the mosque, it was odd and all of a sudden it went very fast".

And the Champs-Elysées is the famous shopping street where two police officers were shot, one fatally, by an ISIS jihadi.

A statement said they "firmly condemned" the attempted attack. A search was made of the driver's home, a source close to the investigation said, and the suspect made "confused remarks in relation" to jihadist attacks that have killed 239 people in France since 2015. Test showed he was neither under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
