US urges China to let Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo choose own doctors

But Mr Liu, 61, has served his last sentence: the Nobel Peace Prize victor has been released from prison on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.

The following year he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, a move that has greatly angered the Chinese government.

He has no special plans.

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) also urged China to ensure the right of family members of detained Taiwanese activist Lee Ming-che (李明哲) to visit him in China.

Worldwide human rights groups and supporters demanded that Liu be granted the best medical care in China or overseas and criticised his treatment.

Liu was awarded a Nobel prize for "his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China".

Liu, 61, is a renowned writer and activist who participated in the 1989 protests in Tiananmen Square and in 2010 became China's first Nobel Peace Prize victor. "It's a complete violation of the principles of the prize and an insult to the peace prize itself for the Nobel committee to award the prize to such a person".

It is not known if Liu is being allowed visitors. Relations were not normalized until last December. He is known for having negotiated the safe exit of thousands of student protesters on June 3, when the Chinese military cracked down on the protester movement.

In Hong Kong, about 70 supporters of Liu took to the streets to demand his immediate release on Tuesday, chanting slogans denouncing the Chinese government as a "murderer".

A statement released by Marco Rubio, the chairman of the U.S. congressional executive commission on China, said: "I urge President Trump to seek Liu's immediate humanitarian transfer to the United States".

Liu was not allowed to attend his father-in-law's funeral last year and his mother-in-law's funeral this year, said the source who asked not to be identified.

"It's very hard to understand why his illness is only being treated at the last stage", said Amnesty International's Patrick Poon.

Geng Shuang, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, said Monday he was not aware of the latest development in Liu's case.

While the worldwide community has united in a chorus of condemnation in response to Monday's news, Beijing maintains that he is a criminal, convicted of subverting state power.

Mr Liu has three years left to serve of an 11-year sentence for "inciting subversion" after drafting Charter 08 - which called for multi-party democracy and respect for human rights in China.

On Monday, Liu's lawyer told Sputnik that the dissident was still under control of the Chinese government, and that his medical parole was just another form of imprisonment.

Liu was arrested immediately after the crackdown on Tiananmen, however he was released without any charge in early 1991. Liu was diagnosed on May 23, and prison authorities in a statement said Liu was granted a medical parole and placed in the care of cancer experts, although it was not clear exactly when he was transferred to the hospital. According to a rights group, she was diagnosed with depression years after her detention and suffered a heart attack in 2014.
