United States doctors dispute North Korean coma story

The cause of Warmbier's condition remains uncertain. The North Korean government said Warmbier had suffered from botulism and was given a sleeping pill, but never woke up.

While many have been asking, "What happened to Otto Warmbier?".

Some media reports said the North Koreans suggested Otto Warmbier had come down with a case of botulism and fell into a coma after being given a sleeping pill - an account questioned by a number of officials.

A U.S. diplomat was dispatched to the nation on June 12 to discuss the release of Americans held by the North Korean administration, the department added. According to his parents via CNN, Warmbier was taking a tour of the country, before he was detrained at the Pyongyang airport in January, 2016 for stealing a political propaganda poster.

Mr. Warmbier mentioned that he was angry the family had to be so careful about what they said regarding North Korea while their son was being held captive.

"I don't know what being in shock is, but I'm pretty sure I was", he said, referring to when he was informed Otto Warmbier was in a coma.

During his speech to press, Fred Warmbier called on North Korea to release other American prisoners, saying, "No other family should have to endure what the Warmbiers have".

"North Korea would have calculated before his release and hoped for a positive effect", on bilateral ties, he said, adding that this could backfire if Warmbier's health condition was more serious than they had anticipated.

Pyongyang still has three other Americans in custody, and Fred Warmbier called on North Korea on Thursday to release them, so no other family would have to suffer as his has over the past year.

"The day after he was sentenced, he went into a coma", the father said in an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson scheduled to air Thursday night. Two of them were teachers at a private school while the third person worked in a special economic zone in North Korea.

Doctors treating Otto Warmbier, the comatose USA student released from North Korean detention this week, have said the 22-year-old had suffered extensive brain damage, the cause of which remains unknown.

He said he and his wife grew frustrated with the lack of word about their son from former President Barack Obama's administration, which they said instructed them to keep a low profile to avoid upsetting the North Koreans.

Initially, it was reported that Warmbier was in a coma and had contracted botulism during his imprisonment in the tyrannical state.
