NYC subway station evacuated after smoke, loss of power

This derailment is just one incident in a summer of increasingly severe outages and delays caused in part by the New York City subway systems almost century-old infrastructure.

Lhota hosted a brief press conference Tuesday outside of the 125th Street station in Harlem, where the A train derailed shortly before 10:00 a.m. prompting multiple train evacuations and major delays throughout the system.

"Just got evacuated from a smoke filled train in probably the most terrifying 15 minutes of my NYC life?" one person tweeted.

The Fire Department of NY said three patients were being treated for minor injuries.

Other passengers posted pictures of long waiting lines inside the subway and above ground.

Following the accident, service was suspended or rerouted on several subway lines between upper Manhattan and northern Brooklyn, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

One rider says the A train broke down and "caught fire" at 125th Street.

Service on A, B, C and D trains have been halted in both directions after an A train derailed in Harlem this morning. "It wasn't heavy smoke, but it was frightening", he said.

The impact of the derailment rippled through the line, stalling another 800 riders on nearby trains between the 110th Street (Cathedral Parkway) and 135th Street stations.

Transit workers in hard hats cheered as the yellow tape blocking the entrance was removed.

The number of subway delays has tripled in the past five years, to 70,000 per month. Fire officials estimate that as many as 500 of the 800 people stuck on trains after the power outage exited the train into the tunnel on their own. In April, a power outage backed up trains around New York City and closed a key Manhattan station for 12 hours.
