Airline vet to lead Amtrak in a summer of repairs, reckoning

Charles "Wick" Moorman will be succeeded by former Delta and Northwest Airlines chief Richard Anderson, who will start on July 12.

Although Anderson doesn't have railroad experience, he has great experience in transportation, in understanding the customer experience and in running a major company, Moorman said.

Wick Moorman, who became CEO in September and recruited Anderson, will remain on the job through the end of the year and then become an advisor to the company, Amtrak said in a statement. Amtrak operates at a loss, but in 2015, it benefited from a $10 billion, five-year federal allocation for passenger rail and infrastructure spending.

At Amtrak, Anderson will come aboard a railroad under both operational and political pressures. He assumed Delta's top job in 2007 and led the company through a merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008.During his tenure, Delta outpaced its peers in on-time performance, grew rapidly in top business markets such as NY and acquired stakes in airlines in the United Kingdom, China, Mexico and Brazil.

"It is an honor to join Amtrak at a time when passenger rail service is growing in importance in America". During his time at Delta, Anderson helped turn the once ailing legacy carrier into one of the most efficient, effective, and profitable airlines in the world.

Moorman became Amtrak's "transitional" CEO last summer.

Amtrak is scheduled to do emergency fix work at Penn Station over the summer. "I'm passionate about building strong businesses that create the best travel experience possible for customers".

Anderson earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Houston at Clear Lake City and a juris doctorate at South Texas College of Law. He is a native of Galveston, TX, where his father worked for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. He was also named to Fortune magazine's Top People in Business list in 2013. "That's an accomplishment in an industry that's just as hard if not more hard than passenger rail".

But Amtrak Chairman of the Board Tony Coscia believes Anderson is up to the challenge.
