America's Cup: Team New Zealand hold the edge over Team USA

This is a rematch of the epic 2013 America's Cup, when Team New Zealand, then skippered by Dean Barker, reached match point at 8-1 before Spithill lead Oracle Team USA to eight straight victories on San Francisco Bay to retain the oldest trophy in worldwide sports.

Helmsman Peter Burling, 26, took the lead in the fourth race and extended it, as he had in the previous race.

With the victories, New Zealand put themselves up 1-0 in the first-to-seven points series.

That's a reference to Spithill being Australian, as are other key decision-makers on the crew of Oracle, which is owned by American software billionaire Larry Ellison. "It's not over. We've got five days now, very important days", Spithill said.

"The motivation is always there", said Spithill, who is trying to win the America's Cup for the third straight time before he turns 38.

The New Zealand team are a fast, well-oiled machine with their aerodynamic pod of four "cyclor" sailors, who supply the energy needed to power the boat's massive wing sail by pedaling on bikes.

The match-up between ORACLE TEAM USA and Emirates Team New Zealand is a rematch of the 2013 America's Cup Match in which ORACLE TEAM USA staged what many call the greatest comeback in sport.

Team NZ skipper Glenn Ashby said while the crew would like be back in the water tomorrow keeping the momentum up, they had targeted these next five days in the schedule for upgrades to the boat and finetuning work.

"We need to make some serious changes".

Although Team USA beat New Zealand twice in qualifying, the Kiwis were able to squeeze more from their foiling catamaran as they battled through the challenger semi-finals and final - while the defenders looked on from the sidelines. "But we also made a lot of mistakes". Of course, unless there is a drastic last-minute rule change (this is the America's Cup so it can not be ruled out), we know Ainslie will not be coming to the rescue.

They also benefitted from the luck of the wind Gods when what could have been the decisive race was scratched because it was over the time limit due to light airs. Simon van Velthooven, who won a bronze medal in track cycling at the London Olympics, was aboard for Race 3.

"I think it just shows you guys will fall for anything", the 37-year-old Spithill said, hinting it was all a ploy. Olympic rowing champion Joe Sullivan replaced him for Race 4.

"We're really excited about the challenge over the next five days of taking that next step and keeping on pushing forward". “I thought we were faster than yesterday but unfortunately its just not enough.

A win by 49 seconds in race three was bettered by a winning margin of 1min 12sec in race four as the the boat helmed by Peter Burling charged to within four wins of lifting the Auld Mug.
