Off-duty black St. Louis cop mistakenly shot by white cop

But sources say the off-duty officer was shot by a fellow cop who did not recognize him as an officer, in a separate encounter away from the initial crash.

Police said around 10 p.m. Wednesday, the license plate recognition system in downtown St. Louis spotted a vehicle stolen from Maryland Heights June 15.

The vehicle eventually crashed in front of a house, after which more gunfire was exchanged, according to the news station. Police took him and another suspect into custody. He complied with the order and as soon as the officers recognized him they told him to stand up and asked him to come toward them.

At about the same time, another officer who had just arrived on the scene saw what was happening and "fearing for his safety and apparently not recognizing the off-duty officer, discharged a shot, striking the off-duty officer in the arm".

In 2009, 25-year-old New York City police Officer Omar J. Edwards, who was black, was shot and killed by a white officer on a Harlem street while in street clothes.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that police initially called the incident an example of "friendly fire" and that the 38-year-old Black officer got "caught in the crossfire" between the police and the suspects. The dog was reportedly charging after police officers when they fired several rounds.

The incident is a "real problem", a lawyer for the wounded cop said in a statement. "But this has been a national discussion for the past two years; there's this perception that a Black man is automatically feared". It is unclear whether his shooter was placed on administrative leave.

Two suspects in the chase were apprehended. Another 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody and the third suspect, described by police as being "young", is now at-large.

Two police officers then shot at the suspects, hitting one in the ankle, before the off-duty officer emerged from his home with his official gun. He was taken to a hospital and treated for his wound. A grand jury voted not to indict Dunton. He and another 17-year-old suspect are jailed.

And in Providence, Rhode Island, an off-duty black police sergeant, Cornel Young Jr., was accidentally killed by two uniformed white colleagues in 2000 while he was trying to break up a fight on a parking lot. The department media office later confirmed them. The FBI statistics don't specify the race of the officers killed.
