Kiwis pedaling toward possible America's Cup upset

In this photo provided by America's Cup Event Authority, Emirates Team New Zealand competes against Oracle Team USA during the America's Cup sailing competition, in the Great Sound of Bermuda, Saturday, June 24, 2017.

Ainslie and his team are going back through the lessons learned from their first tilt at the America's Cup.

Team New Zealand won its races against Oracle Team USA last weekend and leads 3-0.

But 26-year-old New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling believes the challengers can make strides before Saturday as well as they try to bring the Cup - the world's oldest worldwide sporting trophy - to New Zealand for a third time after Black Magic's triumphs in 1995 ad 2000.

Jimmy Spithill made history as Oracle Team USA gave themselves hope by getting up and running in the America's Cup to trail Emirates Team New Zealand 4-1.

"The Bermuda government has spent up to $77 million securing the rights to host and stage the 35th America's Cup", said Radio New Zealand, "and many locals believe the money would have been better spent on social infrastructure such as schools".

Democrat Jon Ossoff vs — Georgia special election
The election outcome will not alter the balance of power in Washington, where Republicans control both chambers of Congress. He has said he grew up in the district and now lives close to Emory University, where his fiancée attends medical school.

Having eradicated the mistakes that had held back Oracle Team USA in race five, Spithill kept his rival at bay in the run up to the finish line and sealed an 11-second win which, vitally, keeps Oracle Team USA firmly in the America's Cup Match, presented by Louis Vuitton. Those wins, coupled with some poor results for Great Britain's Land Rover BAR Academy who started the day with a handy seven-point lead over the rest of the fleet, saw them claw their way up from fifth overnight to have one hand on the trophy. Oracle didnt keep clear when New Zealand came back on starboard and copped another penalty, and had to drop back two boat lengths. That gave them an advantage in being able to get up on the foils quicker and more easily in light winds.

"I would expect (them) to be absolutely smacking us because of the way the tables were weighted in their favour. We're just continually refining it, which should make it a little faster and easier to sail as well - so we can sail more precisely".

“I think they said, ‘Ah, we heard rumors that youve been testing but we never thought youd actually bloody do it, “ van Velthooven said.

Two former America's Cup winners, John Bertrand of Australia and Bertarelli, have been in Bermuda in recent days and could return to the event if the Kiwis win.

He crossed ahead on the third leg.

With Peter Burling and Blair Tuke leading the team, New Zealand has started the competition confidently and has showed huge power and awareness.
