Brussels: Central Station attacker was Moroccan national, say authorities

Federal prosecutor Eric Van der Sypt said soldiers "neutralised" the suspect immediately after a small explosion there on Tuesday night and "we do not know if the man is still alive or that he is dead". It was a lucky escape for several travelers nearby. Nobody else was injured. Van der Sypt said the man did not have an explosive belt.

CBS News is reporting the Moroccan man was shot after he charged at the authorities following the failure of his bag - which reportedly contained nails - to completely explode.

Van der Sypt said the man was from the Molenbeek neighborhood, the home and transit point for numerous suspects linked to attacks in Brussels and in Paris in November 2015.

Those measures come on top of ones that have been in place under the second highest level of terror alert since twin bomb attacks killed 32 people in Brussels in March a year ago.

Events in Brussels including a concert by rock band Coldplay were set to continue, although authorities said there would be extra security and warned people not to bring backpacks.

Belgium's Prime Minister Charles Michel said that the shooting of the suspect "could have been potentially very dangerous".

The bomber entered the Central Station in the Belgian capital at 8:39 pm (1839 GMT) and approached a "group of passengers" twice.

The soldier opened fire, hitting the man several times and killing him on the spot.

The country will remain at threat level 3, meaning there is a serious and real threat, but an imminent attack is not deemed likely, he said.

Belgian press reported that the terrorist comes from Molenbeek, one of Brussels 19 municipallities known for years to be a hotbed for Islamist radicalism.

The prosecutors also confirmed that a search in the terrorist's apartment in Molenbeek was carried out on Wednesday. Public transportation was reopened Wednesday morning, he said. Belgian soldiers later shot dead the assailant.

It is a kind of way of life that Prime Minister Michel says more and more people have to adapt to.

Police in Belgium have raided the home of the attack suspect who was killed at the Brussels Central Station and took bags full of evidence with them.

Belgian soldiers shot the man after he detonated the small device in the terror attack on Tuesday evening, and he later died.
