Uber adds tipping to app

For years, Uber drivers have complained that the app doesn't prompt riders to tip them. Passengers will be charged if they cancel their ride after more than two minutes - down from five minutes.

On the other hand, riders who keep drivers waiting outside for more than two minutes will begin to incur additional "per minute" fees.

Most recently, Uber disclosed that it had systematically underpaid drivers in NY for over two years and that it would be reimbursing them an estimated tens of millions of dollars in total. The other features will roll out in August.

"Tipping is an important step forward, but it's only one of many steps we're taking today and in the months to come to improve the driver experience from end to end", Brightman added. The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Uber's past usage of phony software created to thwart regulators.

The public reaction will likely be mixed, as it has been on Twitter, with consumers divided between wanting to pay drivers well and wanting the Uber model to remain the same. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission in April said it was planning to propose a rule no later than July that would require Uber to add a tipping feature to its app.

The leave was recommended by an investigation from former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

The company is rolling out the new feature in Seattle, Minneapolis, and Houston before going nationwide with it.

Of course, there is also a darker undercurrent to today's news, as Uber has been facing mountains of negative press recently, mostly related to its corporate operations where office and executive staff have been reeling with sexual harassment allegations and other negative workplace conditions. The company so far has prevailed. The company, which has always avoided in-app tipping like the plague is now adding an option for the same within its main application. More changes are coming: Uber will reveal a new set of improvements every month for the next six months in an attempt to win back the trust of both their customers and employees.

It's hard to determine whether Uber's misdeeds have cost ridership nationally.

In the past, Uber argued that the lack of tipping made the process quick and easy, an approach they preferred in the car-sharing industry. But Uber has since recovered.
