6 killed, 74 injured in massive London high-rise blaze

A number of people have been killed in a huge fire which engulfed a 27-storey block of flats in central London on Wednesday, London Fire Brigade said.

Fire services said they received the first call at 00:54 am on Wednesday (2354 GMT Tuesday) and were on scene at the Grenfell Tower public housing complex within six minutes.

Equally the police have stressed if you did report someone missing and they have since been found safe and well, contact the same number to let them know of the change in circumstance.

More than 100 police officers were on scene, alongside 100 medics and 250 firefighters, he said.

All 24 floors of Grenfell Tower in North Kensington were swiftly engulfed, trapping residents in their homes and reportedly forcing some to jump to escape the flames.

Refurbishment of the housing block had been completed past year and the Fire Brigades Union said something had gone badly wrong with fire prevention procedures at the building.

It is not known yet what caused the fire, which firefighters continue to battle.

But the situation faced at Grenfell Tower in London presented an extremely hard situation, Mr Parkin says, because the fire was able to spread so rapidly, and appeared to engulf almost the entire building.

ECFRS offers free home safety visits, including fitting a smoke alarm, and also runs a match-funding "Think Sprinkler" scheme to help fund installation of sprinklers in buildings with vulnerable people.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan says questions need to be answered about tower blocks around the city following a devastating fire.

Witnesses reported the entire building was on fire by around 2:00 am (0100 GMT).

A blaze at a 24-story apartment block broke out around midnight, and parts of the building were still ablaze some nine hours later on Wednesday morning.

A woman held her baby out a window as fire and smoke surrounded her.

One said a baby was dropped from the ninth or 10th floor, another that she saw a five-year-old boy dropped from a fifth or sixth floor window. Some were still in their pajamas, having fled in a panic hours earlier. "I think it's unlikely there will be any announcement today", a spokesman for the Northern Irish party told AFP.

Survivors said they felt likely to be alive. "There was heavy smoke in the hallway".

He says tenants have been complaining for years about issues at the building.

A blog post from Grenfell Action Group in November said "only a catastrophic event" would expose the concerns residents had.

Scotland Yard has confirmed a number of fatalities and at least 50 people have been treated in hospital, according to London Ambulance.

Rydon, the firm that carried it out, said its work "met all required building control, fire regulation, and health and safety standards".

London Ambulances' hazardous environments team has also rushed to the scene.
