More trouble for Trump's travel ban; friend suggests he might fire Mueller

US President Donald Trump is considering terminating special counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed to lead the FBI investigation into Russia's alleged ties to the 2016 US presidential election.

Rosenstein testified that he is the only one who has the authority to fire Mueller, who was appointed following the May 9 ousting of James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, and that he had seen no good cause to do so. "If there were good cause, I would consider it", Rosentsein said, adding, "If there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter to me what anybody says".

A source close to the Trump legal team told Fox News that Ruddy's statement just came from watching another Trump lawyer, Jay Sekulow, discuss the Mueller probe on ABC's "This Week" - and Sekulow did not directly suggest the president was thinking about firing Mueller.

"Time to rethink", he tweeted Monday, citing Mueller's hiring decisions and Comey's admission that he had instructed a friend to share with reporters notes he had taken of his private conversations with Trump in order to force the appointment of a special counsel.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied on Tuesday having an undisclosed meeting with Russia's ambassador to the USA or conversations with any Russian officials about the US election that sent Donald Trump to the White House.

Although American Urban Radio Networks White House Correspondent April Ryan told CNN's Erin Burnett of "mass hysteria in the West Wing about this" later that evening, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told senators during a hearing Tuesday that there was "no secret plan" underway to remove Mueller.

Mueller was succeeded by James Comey, who was sacked by Trump last month while he was overseeing the investigation into potential Russian interference into last year's election and potential collusion with the Trump presidential campaign.

"I'm not going to follow any orders unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders".

Chris Ruddy, a friend of Trump's and the chief executive of Newsmax, a USA news outlet, went so far as to suggest the president was already thinking about "terminating" Mueller.

The fiery Southern Baptist minister, who ran for president in 1988, hired Sekulow to be the chief counsel of his American Center for Law and Justice.

Sessions' appearance before the intelligence committee is an indication of just how much the Russian Federation investigation has shaded his tenure.

"It horrifies liberals. I think he will be there for 8 years". "With respect to this subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorised to comment".

Mueller has been silent since he was named to head the Russian Federation investigation on May 17, a week after Trump fired FBI chief James Comey expressing frustration over the probe.

The effort to muddy the waters surrounding the investigation is coming amid growing White House concern that the probe could detract from the president's agenda for months or years to come. She asked whether Scarborough's sources flatly denied Ruddy's claim, but her co-host said he trusted his sources.

Rosenstein said he was also unaware of any "secret plan" to get rid of Mueller.

"I think the President, I know because we've talked about it".

Press secretary Sean Spicer told NPR's Tamara Keith, "Mr".

Ruddy was at the White House on Monday to meet White House aides, but did not speak with the president, Spicer said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said via email, "Chris speaks for himself".

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the issues Gingrich and others have raised.
